What is the Seasonal Flu?

The seasonal flu is a contagious disease, caused by the influenza virus, which is spread by coughing, sneezing or nasal secretions and can affect anyone at any age. For most people, the flu may last only a few days, but for those with certain health conditions (heart, liver, lung or kidney disease, asthma, diabetes, etc) they can become sicker.

When is Flu Season?

Flu season starts to peak in November and continues through to April. The CDC recommends getting your flu vaccine in the months of October and November in order to prevent an outbreak. Receiving your flu shot during flu season can also help prevent yourself from catching the flu.

Consult Your Health Care Provider First If:

• You are pregnant
• Are allergic to eggs
• Have Guillain-Barre Syndrome
• Undergoing current treatment for certain immune system conditions, such as cancer, leukemia or AIDS

Other options may be available to you. Please ask your health care provider for details.

Will A Flu Shot Make Me Sick?

The flu shot you receive should protect you from getting the flu. After your flu shot, you may feel some muscle soreness at the injection site. You may feel a little feverish or fatigued after your shot, but that is because your body is reacting to the vaccine and building up your immune system.

Every flu season, a new batch of the flu vaccine is made, based on what strains of flu virus scientific research considers to be a threat that flu season. There are usually 3 deactivated, or killed, strains of the flu virus in the vaccine each new flu season.
